Magento Inventory stock availability

Magento only offers two states for stock availability (in stock and out of stock). I use "preorder" for most items that I offer which means items purchased are "to be manufactured" according to customer specifications. It would be great if Magento offered "pre-order" status for stock availability. Anyone have a suggestion as to how this order type can be effectively shown? is stock availability the right place to indicate an item is "pre-Order"?
kyle - If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would we ever know?

I would say to stay away from trying to add a different stock state if at all possible. You can still sell items even if they show as out of stock by setting the inventory configuration appropriately.
Sam has added the cool feature of being able to assign a specific attribute value to specific locations or tabs. On one of my sites, I created a "Notice" attribute and if there are any products that are on backorder, custom items, or for whatever reason require a special note, we put it in this attribute text field.
Look at this product on the RocketTheme Demo and look for the "Short Description". That's just the Short Description attribute assigned to that position. For my site, I just assigned my "Notice" attribute there. - Last Edit: 9 years 3 months ago by Kat05.

Thanks for the reply. I have sent a query to Magento Community support asking the same question. Dono if I will get a reply but we will see. I have been experimenting with a lot of CMS eCommerce packages looking for one that would work for me and I think that OpenCart was one that offered Pre-Order as a stock status. Out of the 10 or so that I tested, Magento had the best features.
I will look at the notice attr, thanks for the head up on that.. - If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would we ever know?

Your suggestion works fine. That will work for now. Hopefully Magento Community will take my suggestion for a "pre-Order" status under consideration.
