Existence, Availability, or Creation of accordion side-menu

Posted 17 years 6 months ago
    • Hello all,

I'm fairly new to Joomla and RocketTheme, though I'm quite enjoying both, and I've been looking around for some specific functionality for a side-menu I'm using with the site I'm working on, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I was hoping for information or advice and so I thought I'd put the question to all of you.

First, let me describe the functionality I'm looking for.

I'd like a vertical side-menu where clicking on an entry/item the sub-items would slide into view below the item clicked on and sandwiched between the parent item and successive menu items. I believe that this is referred to as an accordion style movement/reveal and a good example of what I'm thinking of is the left navigation menu on the mootools site, in the document section:

      http://docs.mootools.net/

Note that the behavior in the Accordian demo is almost identical to the side-menu system, except that when one item is clicked on in the menu any previously clicked on items remain visible while the accordion demo toggles between them, displaying only one item's contents at a time. Below is a link to the accordion demo:

I'm not really sure which one would be better for my situation, or more difficult to implement, but at this point I'd be happy with either.

      So, my questions:
      • Is is possible to modify an existing side-menu to do this?
      • If not, is there an existing module/extension/whatever that does this?
      • If neither of the above, conveniently, will I have to create a module/extension/whatever on my own if I'm dead-set on this?
      • If I do have to create one (I'm guessing it would be an extension, right?) does anyone know of good resources/tutorials on creating extensions for Joomla? And, how lost am I going to be if I don't know php?

One caveat is that I would like this to work with Joomla's menu system since the site's menu structure will likely change in the future and if someone else is maintaining the site at that time they shouldn't have to go in and hand-recode javascript, but rather use the joomla admin interface to modify the menu in question, as normal.

Any thoughts, ideas, questions... hate mail? ;)

Oh, as a final note, below is a link to the current web site (very much in progress) that this will be going on. If you click on 'Departments' you will see the current behavior where a new page is opened and the sub-items are displayed between 'Departments' and 'Blackboard,' whereas I would like the menu to simply slide open and display the sub-items instead--only going to a new page when the sub-items are clicked.
