After 6 and 1/2 months, still have page rank of 0. Why? [solved!]

Posted 17 years 1 month ago
    • Ok, so my site "officially launched" on Sept 1st, but I've been working on it as a live site for 6 and 1/2 months. One of the reasons for working on it live was to let Google index it. And it is indexed. But even though I have several quality incoming links, I still have a page-rank of 0. Does anyone have any clues or ideas on what I might do to move that? I have another site, only a few months older, that has far fewer incoming links that is at least up to 3. Sad as a 3 is, it is far better than 0.

    • If you want some insight to what Google sees about your site try this:

      www.google.com/webmasters/tools

Something strange to look at. If you got to Google.com and try in: site:supersmartgames.com the results are something I've never seen before. Maybe one of the SEO experts here can help you out.

    • You must make difference between Page Rank (actualised all the time) and the green bar (actualised when GG want); Since April Google didn't actualise the green bar! In several forum, people are asking GG do not want to continue with the green bar because webmasters only look at that.
You can have PR 0 now but obtain good positions in SE. I have a website created in April and I have very good positions for several keywords; however I have a PR0 ;)

    • This part of website design is my least favorite by far. I'm sure mostly because I don't understand it at all. I read as much as I can on this stuff, because I do think that it's important, but I usually end up more confused than when I started...

Mack, you are so right. That is very strange. Except for the first line, google lists my site like this :

Super Smart Games - Play Harder--Get Smarter
Username. Password. Login · Lost Password? No account yet? Register · Home · Little Kids · Older Kids · Teenagers · Adults · Teachers · News Feeds ...
      www.supersmartgames.com/magazine/ - 51k - Cached - Similar pages - Note this

over and over again, 439 times, the exact same description.

      Hmmm, Google suggests otherwise:

      www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=link%3Awww...ames.com&btnG=Search

Well that is weird. As this shows: www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=com.micr...super+smart+games%22 Google does know about many of the links to my site and lists them. I did the backlink check on Smart Page Rank, and got this: www.smartpagerank.com/pagerank-backlinks...es.com%2F&results=50 .

I know it may be that webmasters are the only ones who look at PR, but that is the thing. They do. And as my site does rely a fair bit on blogger write ups and links from other sites, having a PR of 0 makes those relationships a bit harder to foster. Especially as there seems to be some feeling out there that a PR of "unranked" or "n/a" is okay, but a "0" means that Google is punishing you or that you are completely irrelevant.

Thanks guys, for bringing the weirdness to my attention. Apparently Google thinks that I have a website with 439 pages of the exact same thing, that absolutely no one links to (why would they?). No wonder I have a PR of 0.

I don't know. Like I said, I find this part to be so confusing.

    • That is known to occur when you don't enter a meta description and keywords for your pages. Google makes up it's own description based on the content of the page.

What you need to do is make meta entries for each content item you publish.

Using the global meta tags (found in global configuration) and nothing else is probably why you got yourself blacklisted. By doing so, you are telling Google that every page on your site has the same content. Google does a quick check and finds this isn't true, so thinks you're trying to con the engine.

A simple example is your 'contact us' page. Some keywords you listed are "Educational, Education, and "Computer Games". None of those keywords/phrases actually appear on the contact us page... so you'd most certainly have been penalised for that. Using keywords that aren't actually present on the page is a blackhat method and a surefire way to get yourself a PR0.

In this case, google has found your keywords and description to be bogus, so it created it's own description... which it has used on 400 or so pages.

A simple rule with Joomla sites is to never use global config meta tags.

Disclaimer: I believe that web designers must grasp at least the basics of SEO, and hence have read many of the great available resources on the topic. However, I am by no means an SEO guru and everything i posted here could be totally off target.

    • Hmm, I'm not so sure, I only use the Global Meta (I just don't have the time to add metadata to all my content) and my site: listing in Google has the same problem...yet there I am at PR5 (PR6 for the demo subdomain, bizarrely).

I think Google makes it up as it goes along ;)

    • Thanks for your thoughts on this GollumX. I was going to go through and add Meta descriptions and keywords a couple of months ago before I launched, but i had read in several places that Google doesn't even bother to look at those anymore, and faced with adding the data for over 300 (at that time) pages, I was happy to let it go. Especially if, as I had read, it didn't matter.

I agree totally. It's just that I read so many contradictory thoughts on SEO, that it's hard to know what to believe, and what is just speculation.

Dan - I think they think that we are their puppets, and they love to watch us dance.

Well, off I go to enter meta description and keywords for more than 400 pages. Who wishes they were me right now? Show of hands...anyone....anyone.....no one?

Can't say that I blame you.

I am making progress on filling in all my meta tags, and will re-submit to Google over the weekend, but to be clear (so I don't get it wrong again), are you saying that I should not fill in the Global config meta data form? Isn't that how Google will describe my homepage?

Sorry if I'm being daft about this.

    • I have probably confused the issue further :)

PR and SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) are not to be confused with each other. Dan has about 140 recognized incoming links. That's where the PR5 comes from. The demo subdomain has only 40, but they must be links from better sites with high PR. You could be doing all sorts of things wrong... using blackhat SEO methods and the like, but if heaps of (well ranked) sites link to you, Google can't deny that your content must be of interest.

It often feels like Dan said : google makes it up as it goes along :)

I leave the joomla global meta tags blank on all my sites.

Joomla combines the global and page meta tags. Usually, what you put in your global meta tags is not true for every single page on your site, hence it's often better to leave the global meta tags empty. The only keyword that might apply to every page in your site is "games", because even if it doesn't appear in content, it is in your title and probably a few menu links as well. However, if you used "games" in the global meta tags, don't use "games" in any of the content page meta tags.

Like you posted earlier, keywords no longer hold as much weight with Google, however, doing it right eliminates one possible reason you might be getting penalised (we can't know for sure if you even are being penalised). Adding meta tags to heaps of pages is a pain, but if you do it right when the site is first set up, it's no hassle at all to add meta info every time you add a page of content later on.
