    • i didn't see anyone mention the sandbox effect ... its only a theory but with so many websites going live every day there is a theory that google are basically putting new sites into a sandbox to be revisited after a while to see if they really have developed

one way to counter this, again this is just a theory, is you buy the domain name for 10 years ... google sees how long the domain is registered for and thinks you must be serious. so you could, in thoery, skip the sandbox

i personally lost faith in page rank a while ago. while it's good for generating a bit of money (because lots of people want links from high page ranked sites) it really doesn't work

also ... about gloabl meta data and leaving it blank - that all depends on how you want people to find your site. if for example (i'm using one of my sites here) you want your site to be found on one search term i.e. avfc then stick avfc in global meta description and keywords ... because it will help to have avfc on every single page of your site

    • Hi Ellie,

Before setting up my website I did a lot reading on seo and I agree the more you know, the more you know what you don't know.
      Some things and tips turned out very well for my site;
      - Look at concurrent sites, what keywords do they have
      - I installed sh404sef for search engine friendly url's (and thought about section en categorynames with the keywords in it)
      - Google seems to like changing content on the frontpage (that's why newsites are populair in google) so I put some modules high in my page with automatically changing content >> searchcloud, newsflas, e-quotes, new articles.
      - think smart (but not to smart or you will be punished); example even with the author tag I place a keyword; one of my keywords is "veterinarian" (but in Dutch) so my authorname is veterinarian ....

At this moment I have some link but not very much but where my old site (build by a "pro") on a certain main keyword didn't get higher than page 25, after 2 weeks online I reach page 5. Some words I'm on place 1

Another tip; look with google keywords for keywords with a lot of searches by visitors but with less concurrent websites...

good luck, I'll be glad to help you with any of the above.

    • So, I don't know what kind of Mojo you people have, but it must be some powerful stuff. Honestly. :o I had been a bit concerned about my lack of page rank for a several weeks now, and I posted about this here on RocketTheme the day before yesterday, hoping for some help from my most trusted source of reliable intel. And I got loads of great advice, and some much appreciated insight. I spent all last night and most of today updating my meta data, and turned off my global meta. I have gotten myself acquainted with Google's Webmaster Tools.

And what do you imagine happened? Well I went away from my 0-ranked site for an hour or two to go have some well deserved (and if not well deserved, well desired) cocktails, and come back to see that Google has deigned to bestow my site a rank after all. In the last hour-ish, I went from a 0, to a 5! And no, I am not drunk and delirious, much.

Was my fevered meta-updating? That seems fast even for Google. Right?

I credit it with Rocket Fuel! ;D

    • PR that we can see is not updated on the fly ie. The PR of every page is updated every time Google sees a new link to your site, and every time the PR of each linking site changes. However, this isn't show to us. We only get a rounded update (PR is actually a floating-point number) every few months or so.

      My guess is either
1.) Your PR was updated yesterday (by pure coincidence)
      or
2.) You have had a PR5 for a while but it wasn't shown until yesterday because you were blacklisted for some reason. (EDIT: after posting this, I read it and this just doesn't sound right lol. I'll leave it here anyway.)
3.) You finally came out of the sandbox, as Damo pointed out above. I'm not sure about this one because you mentioned you had a PR0 as opposed to a N/A.
4.) There was something in those cocktails that you haven't told us about.

There was a point made here about changing content. This is a good point, however, don't change your content too often. If google decides you are some sort of news site, it will rank your pages high when they are first published, but will reduce them as time goes by. This is because it is assumed that any given news item becomes less relevant as time passes. In this paragraph I am referring to the ranking of your pages on SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages), not PR. (PR is only about the number and value of incoming links)

Anyway, glad you got a PR5. Your site just jumped in value. I suggest more cocktails!! :D

    • my guess is it's option number one.

I have a site www.ipodspeakerreviews.com and it has been a 3 for quite a while. Today the PR went from a 3 to a five. Several other of my pages have moved up and down in PR.

My question to ellie is what has happened with the traffic? That is how I measure my sites. I use PR as guide but what counts is traffic and what really counts is conversions.

      I enjoyed reading this thread.

      Thanks!
