    Just learned a lesson that might be a warning to some!!!

    • One morning recently, I woke to find that all 40 sites I had developed and was monitoring were down..."Internal Server Error."

      Turns out the hard drive on my dedicated server had just started to eat itself! The hosting company said they could do nothing to recover the data. The good news was that everything was backed up regularly with Akeeba - the bad news, those files were on the same drive. With 40 sites, and some of them approaching 1GB, it was way too problematic to download all of the jpa files on a regular basis...this would have consumed my bandwidth, taken hours (I live in the boonies and ISP speed is slower than I would like.)

      I was royally screwed!! (my apologies to you living in countries with a monarchy! - yes I was a Brit once ;-)

      A company called DriveSavers (can't praise them enough) recovered most of the data from the drive...had some corrupted files...but most were recoverable. Thank the lord for Akeeba kickstart even though not all sites were able to recovered using it and I had some difficulties getting everyone on-line again. It has been a 4 week nightmare...I am still sane, now completely hairless, alot poorer than I was (data drive cost $2000 to restore - and 4 weeks of unpaid work!) and very grumpy!!!

      I'm changing hosts from one that for 6 years I thought was to best to another who offers daily backups of everything (data stored at a separate location). Also the one I was using has gotten too "successful" and its tech support has become more or less unavailable - I have waited for more than 75 mins on the phone to get to speak to someone at least twice. Their ticket system also sucks!

      So the obvious message is BACK UP, BACK UP, and then BACK UP again...and get a copy stored locally or somewhere other than your live server.

      Your allowed to mention names here. We mods like to hear user experiences with there hosters as a huge amount of our issues with members are there servers.

      I'm a HUGE Akeeba fan, even more so since the software does Cloud backup

      .

      P.S Have you considered doing some different profiles for Akeeba. e.g.

      Daily -> backup DB only
      Weekly -> backup core install of Joomla and Rockettheme stuff
      Monthly -> Content

    • If that host is Hostgator, i am also very unhappy. They have turned to absolute garbage.I am still in the process of getting all my clients off their new crash monthly servers in Provo. :cry:

      Anyways, thanks for the lesson. I hope you get some of your money and sanity back soon. What a nightmare.

    • It was inmotionhosting - their motto "Hosting that doesn't suck" no longer applies!!

      I loved them for 5 years - largely 'cos of their tech support - always a live person within a minute or two of calling...now it's never less than 30 mins and their "first tier" can never fix anything, so that's even further delay!!! Their ticket system sucks too. In the middle of a thread of a ticket, suddenly I get an emails saying it's been referred to billing and would I provide my pin so that they could refer it to tech support. Jeeeesh!!!

      I guess success has gone to their heads and they haven't added staff to support their expanding number of clients. They won't even let me communicate with a senior manager!
      I was an affiliate...but not any more.

      Thanks Dan for the suggestion about akeeba profiles....
