Making multiboot (OSX Leopard+Vista+Linux+a partition FAT32) on MacIntel ?

    • Hi Guys ;)
I just have bought a new Macbook Santa Rosa (64 bits architecture) with a big Hard Drive 250Go.
And ... what I want to have is a multi OS computer which can run as well Vista, OSX Leopard and Linux all in their 64 bits versions and with a coherent system which will not be unstable.

For the moment, the best tutorial I have found has been made by smart Linux guys: In French ( translated by Google ).
However I am not as skilled to judge if their method is a good way.

I don't want to go in a wrong way so I research other good tutorials and some people who have done this on their Mac also.
So If you have some advice you are more than welcome ;D

    • Hi Youyou,

I installed both OSX Leopard and XP with BootCamp (and also Parallels Desktop, so that I have not to reboot in order to use XP).

In latest "à vos mac" Magazine (december 2007) n° 79, there is an article on installing Linux Ubuntu thanks to BookCamp (with a CD Live Ubuntu 7.04 or 7.10).

    • Youyou, i strongly suggest using OS X as your base OS then running VMWare Fusion to run your other OS's. they run very well on top of OS X, very stable, and not driver issues. I run XP and and Vista on vmware, but you can easily run any linux distro too. Many plusses, you can even run them all at the same time assuming you have enough memory.

Yes but the problem of Bootcamp is that it force the OS to work on 32bits mode and I prefer have 64bits versions. Moreover with it you can have only two partition (one for mac and one for Vista) because Bootcamp will not run if the disk is already partitionned

In fact I have added 4 Go of Kingston RAM (Yes I have now a wage as Phd student lol).
But I prefer not virtualize the OS because it will slow the computer (2 OS + 1 software instead of 1 OS) . As I will sometimes use the computer for programming in Matlab, Fortran ... I prefer keep the maximum of capabilities.
Why do you suggest me that ? Have you already have a bad experience with a multi boot ?

    • First VMWare supports 64bit VMs, so that's a plus, second virtualization these days on these modern dual core cpu's is very efficient. It's the new trend with servers for this very reason.

Dual booting is just more cumbersome. It takes longer to 'reboot' into the other OS, it takes more time to install/setup/configure the OS, and it just not as efficient because if you want to get at your mail for example, you either have to reboot back into the other OS or you have to setup a similar mail setup on every OS. This goes for files, bookmarks, whatever. How much nicer to be able to get to everything in one place by just moving the mouse.

With Leopard's spaces and the ability to run vmware fullscreen, you can effectively just flip between os's with a keystroke. You should checkout vmware at least, it's cheaper than parallels, it's been used for years and is an industry standard. You can even download fully pre-installed 'appliances' for linux distros and applications.

      www.vmware.com/appliances/

      Anyway, that's my 2c :)

    • I'm going to have to agree with Andy. I set up dual/triple boot on my desktop and it was more hassle than it was worth. Having to reboot into other OS was more trouble that it is worth.

I have played with Fusion and had pretty good luck with it. I normally play with VMware's ESX (VI3) which is even better than Fusion/VMware server, so I'm pretty spoiled in that respect. However VM's virtualization technology is second to none and ONLY reccommend VMware to any of my customers looking at virtualization.

I can't say enough good stuff about VMware.

If you're concerned about resources, just knwo taht shutting down the virtual machines will free up their resources for your OS. The virtualization application itself is actually a pretty light application so that isn't a big issue.

So if anyone works for VMware and wants to hire me for all of the free publicity, please, just let me know :p

    • I love the fact that in can install xp on a vmware image in a fraction of the time it takes to install on a regular pc. Also i love that i can suspend a vmware instance in a few secs, and start it again just as quick, and it goes back to the exact state. Makes shutting down a think of the past...

Also the ability to access files with shared folders between the vm's and the host machine.. invaluable! Printers too! infact any resource..

    • I think I will switch to VMware Fusion... I see that I can import Parallels virtual machine in VMware. Will just need to pay again... and do a new reactivation of Windows :P

    • Another great thing about vmware is you can have more than 1 instance running.. in parallels.. you can only have 1, and it's limited to the OS it supports too.
