SEO template problem? Spider reads module table tags...

Posted 16 years 11 months ago
    • Why does module table tags show up when I run a spider simulation on my site? I ran a spider simulator on seochat.com and after my page title the info reads: templates rt versatility iii css iepngfix htc td left div moduletable td right div moduletable td left div moduletable hilite1 td right div moduletable hilite1 td left div... and so on

obviously this is extremely unhelpful for getting my site listed higher on search engines. Additionally, my cloud tag has 'div' and 'moduletable' as the biggest and most prevalent tags!

Does anyone know how to fix it so that this information is not read by a spider?

      here's my site: www.knoxepc.org
using Versatility III & Joomla 1.0.13
I also use sh404SEF with no problems.

      thanks!

    • I am not a SEO expert but maybe some browsers in the Water Cooler like Gollum, maybe, will be able to help you with this.

    • Your site fails HTML validation big time - no guarantee, but if I had to guess, some of those validation errors are causing the spider simulator to crawl your HTML as if it were text, which would explain a lot.

    • ok thanks for the info. Is there an easy way to make it so my html is validated? Any idea what's causing this, is it the template, or another module/component I am running?

      thanks,

    • RT templates tend to validate out of the box, so it is likely something that has happened "after the fact".

If I had to guess, I'd say that you edited the template in a Web editor that changed some of the tags from XHTML 1.0 Transitional to 4.01 (strict?).

Failing that (which might be an easy fix depending on your editor), the only thing for it is to go to the validator, and start tracking down errors: validator.w3.org/

    • I just ran the same simulator on a site I've finished recently (fully XHTML/CSS compliant) and the spider check was entirely normal, no HTML elements at all, so like Matt says it's something on your site.

The DOCTYPE is correct, so it's not that.

You have 127 HTML validation errors, which is pretty bad - my first target would be the slideshow thing on the front page. Disable that then try the validation again, and see if it reduces the error count.

    • yeah, I guess that makes sense. However, the only place I edited the HTML was in the HTML template editor in the back end of Joomla. I didn't think that it would change it that drastically. But you are saying that RT templates shouldn't cause this problem out of the box?

      thanks,

Correct, RT templates tend to validate out of the box, and if they don't, it is just one or two bugs, which usually get caught and fixed in the first update.

Dan is right about checking the slideshow - disable that and revalidate. After that, I would install another template (or another copy of your template), stock, and switch to that, and then validate again.

If, with all suspect extensions deactivated, and a stock template, you still get validation errors, then you have a server problem, which would be odd, but not unheard of.

    • with the slideshow module disabled, the error count goes from 127 to 103. So that accounts for some of the problem, but by no means the majority of it.
