Curiosity Question

    • Hi guys

I've created a few Joomla sites for other people and have always done it live on their domain.

I now have a client that doesn't want it live on their domain as they still want to use their old site until the new one is finished.

How do you web develop gurus do this?

Do you do it on your own websites in a new folder dedicated just for that site or do you set up subdomains for the new client site?

I would love to hear what your workflow is.

I'd be grateful to hear from you experts the best way to do this.

      Cheers
      Irene

    • I don't consider myself a guru cos i'm newbie ..

you can create it in a folder within the same domain protected with a pass through .htaccess or cpanel

      regards

    • I normally do most of the development locally (mainly because it's very rare that they don't need a custom template, or serious modification on one)...then clone to a subdomain to add the content, and let the client see the progress. When it's pretty much there I then clone to their server and check everything...

    • If you develop locally - how can they approve the design work you are doing?

They are suggesting a multi stage process:

      1. Develop locally until you are happy with the template (this speeds things up)
      2. Copy the design from local to a folder and/or subdomain on your server
      3. After client approval, either repeat steps one and two again, or move the site to its final location, and perform a last minute health check.

    • I have a VPS/Reseller account so I do the following:

      1. If they have a current CPanel host I get their username from them

2.Create a hosting account for their domain - using the same user name at the other host
**None of their domain information is changed**

      3. This allows me to create the site just as I would on their host with the lone exception of the Live site setting in the config.php

      4. If they want to see the site I can give them a link based on the IP

The sites I build I usually host so all that really needs to change when I am done is the domain info and the live site setting.

    • @Joe:

I often use a similar approach, but I go ahead and modify my HOSTS file to update the IP address for that domain so that it is identical to the real thing. This is especially useful if there are going to be a lot of hardcoded links (bad form but unavoidable sometimes.)

For design specific stuff I will pass a composition for approval (for custom work), rather than built a live site for a design. Easier to change a mock-up than a working template :)
