randomising content on home page

I'm new - be gentle!
Anyway to make the main part of the home page ramdomise stories?
I can make it list a number of stories and change the order - but I really want to show just one story but maybe randomly pick one to show?
I have "newsflashes" running on the RHS already but want the major home page content to be dynamic as well.
I'm coping well with Joomla - changed from phpx and its a steep learning curve but SOOOOOOO much better!

I see this got moved - sorry for not being clear - I'm using the simplix theme hence the reason for where i posted it

You can move it back now if you think the Simplix forum is a better place!
