I'm trying desperately to build a community so this conversation fascinates me.
What professional script? Got a link?
Does SMF have community features beyond the forum?

You can link the SMF boards using a bridge from joomlahacks, you can click the link at the bottom of the screen Joomla Bridge by JoomlaHacks.com
There are a couple of facebook clones going around the web, however, I haven't used it and I can't tell you about how friendly it is to work with. I am currently working with a script called phpmotion, which is a youtube clone but it has better community features built in. There is a joomla community which uses phpmotion but a bridge hasn't been built yet to use it with joomla, but the joomla community for phpmotion is working on one as soon as the next version comes out. Okay, so your talking about everything but a community and most of your references are things that don't work with or might be coming soon to joomla. :
If you want video -- Seyret Rocks, was designed for joomla and it works with video in a Youtube fashion plus it has a plugin for community builder.
If you want a forum - Fireboard requires no bridge and has a plugin for community builder.
SMF does not function as a community builder, it is a wonderful forum, but it lacks function for a stand alone community that features PROFILES.
Communtiy Builder works great - plus most people who do not like it is - because of the layout - they want it right out of the box to look like what they think it should look like. Go to Ninjoomla.com and check out what Daniel did to Community Builder...beautiful. Plus, members get access to his Community Builder templates.

You are absolutly right, but Trent is currently using joomla 1.5 the community builder templates that you are talking about are 1.0. I agree that Seyret Rocks and I love it, but again right now it is only 1.0.
I am guessing that SMF is working with community builder then for rocket theme? I didn't know that but makes sense.

The site is a combination news/social networking portal for three adjacent towns in the Southeastern U.S. We currently report the latest news, events, etc in in our community and encourage community discussion via a phpbb forum.
My desire is to expand the forum into true social networking platform. I want to allow our users the opportunity to have private groups with their own private forums, a robust user profile, the ability to share photos/videos, etc.
Also, for the record, I’m developing parallel sites in both J1.0 and J1.5. I have no qualms sticking with J1.0 if it’ll get me where I want to go.
I'm intrigued with the concept of Fireboard/CB/GroupJive combination, but I fully admit that I don't know what all is possible with that combination of extensions. I asked in another thread for an example link. If anyone knows of a community portal getting maximum use out of Fireboard/CB/GroupJive, please share it.

Trent - here is a site I am almost closing out (woo, wooo) it uses CB, FB, Group etc... http://WeWhoGolf.com I Kept it simple and will be expanding it more as I build up user base.
