I've been continuously having this problem with 1.5 regarding the FTP layer / adding components and modules in general...
No matter what I do, installations bomb... This is a pity because the 1.5 launchers work pretty good. I checked out the joomla forums forever and it seems this is a big problem that is unsolved... has anyone here solved this issue?
I have php 5.25 installed, so thats not an issue...
Warning: file_put_contents(/home/betough/public_html/new/tmp/install_47ade770c043b/) [function.file-put-contents]: failed to open stream: Is a directory in /home/betough/public_html/new/libraries/joomla/filesystem/file.php on line 298
I tried that already...on local or remote URL... Tried unpacking to a folder too...
This appears to me to be an issue with your tmp folder being unwritable perhaps.

Hi Brad thanks for the tip... I CHmod'd the tmp folder from 750 to 777, same instance... It unpacks the files in the tmp folder, but nothing installs... It seems this is a common bug with 1.5 I just wish I could figure out what causes it and work around it... I am dying to use 1.5 but, it seems the 1.0x series is much more "bulletproof"
I'll continue to look for a fix...Has anyone here had similar issues? It seems tons of people on joomla.org have....
I don't think this is a 1.5 issues as much it is webserver related. I have had no issues with 1.5 myself, doing just what you are trying to do.

Thanks Brad... I'll try an install on another server I have access to. Right now, I use Hytek Hosting mainly because I used to have a Virtual Dedicated and it was a total pain... Cheap but not all that reliable, and when I had the virtual server I didn't make any dough with the sites so it was really just a lost investment, but did run WAY faster... And, I like Cpanel, plesk confuses me...
Maybe I'll try for some others like hostgator or something... I know the Rochen servers are killer too, I looked into that when I decided to go with 1and1 just for price reasons...
Right now I pay like $10 per month for a reseller account w/ 2gb space... guess you get what you pay for huh? =)
Last time I tried with php4 running as a CGI. It appeared all fine. Can you try that easily?

No my webhost pretty much sucks... I just signed up for a hostgator account... 600 gigs of space should do nicely compared to 2 gigs... and cheaper... wow...
they support php 4 and 5, so should be easier to check into this....
