What kind of server should I buy???

Hello,
Okay guys I need your advice. I am thinking of buying a server and keep it at my home. So instead of sending all my clients to a third party, meaning Host provider, I can easily build, maintain and host their sites to my server and take care of it from my home, without bothering calling hosting companies and so on…
My question is this: - What do you think would be the best server to get and implement my plan in it. I can say I am thinking always of windows servers.
It will be great if you reply here with some real examples and Links where I can see it my self. If this is not too much to ask I can say I am all ears.

Well, first off I personally would not recommend a windows environment. Questions you need to ask yourself.
What kind of connection do you have at home?
If it was your site would you wanted hosted there?
What kind of backup devices do you plan to use?
Are you going to offer a cpanel for your users?
What about email service? Are you going to have a dedicated server just for email?
I know it sounds like a lot of questions, but these are questions I have been asking myself. I have learned that I do not want a windows server like I thought I did.

The cost to have the proper connection to your house would probably be more than actually renting a quality server.
Where are you located?
If a Texas server would suit you I would highly recommend the following:

I am not sure about deals at theplanet, but softlayer is always advertising specials.

Depending on the amount of clients, you might consider a VPS with a reseller package.

So you guys think is NOT a good idea to create a little hosting area in my home? I much I have to spend? Don't you think is better to have the real think (the actual device) at home rather than pay monthly for a server or a dedicated sever etc...
Can someone list here the average prices I have to spend?

dont be confused. i have a 10mb line in and out from my house ad my ISP is happy for me to use it as a webserver (i live quite remote and wont be sucking off anyone) but the cost in me doing this properly would be maybe $5,000 to get it up and running properly
buy a dedicated server for $150 a month and have these guys manage it for you, you'll still make a profit with loads less hassle:

I know, it sounds like a good idea to have a Server at home, but it's always the worst case scenarios, you should have an eye on:
*) A hosting provider has multiple/redundant Network-Connections. Means, if one fails, he switches to another, without customers even noticing it. You probably won't have something like that at home, so if - for some reason - your Internet-Connection fails, you have a lot of angry customers calling in and - in the worst case - even sueing you (ok, you could only offer 80% Uptime-Guarantee in your Contracts, or something, but who would choose you then, when there are a bazillion of 99.9%-Uptime-Guarantee-Providers out there?).
*) Think about Hardware-Failure. You'll need to have at least one unused identical server at Stock to quickly swap the HDs and have it boot up and work again, if something goes wrong (and things tend to do so, after a certain time)
*) How do you backup? You'll need another Server with massive and secure HD-Space (i.E. Raid 5) or a really expensive Tape-Backup-Solution.
*) Professionals. There are a lot of professional Technicians taking care of all the stuff at a Network Operations Center - tbh (no offence) you don't really sound like you have a clue about all this. What will you answer to technical questions from your customers? Or how will you fix things quickly?`
There are hundrets of points like these and the only answer is: If you really want to have your own Server:
*) first off get a clue about the whole matter (i.E. learn Linux-Administration)
*) then get a dedicated Server at a good Provider
You will have the possibility to work on the Server, like if you sat in front of it (SSH, VNC, Rescue-Consoles, LARA-Consoles etc.), while Professionals will take care of any Hardware - and/or Network-Fault in a matter of Minutes.

Thank you all for the quick and great feedback. I can say I am impressed with everything. I do do appreciate you spending your time and writing here your opinion to make me understand the whole thing.
I think it all comes to a point where I have to stop thinking about having the sever at my home. I will seek for a dedicated server. Now of course I will try to look for something that will cost me less than $200.00 USd per month. Probably a dedicated server where I can host at least 50-100 sites.
Once again thank you all and if you really have some great experiences with hosting providers who offer dedicated servers with the specs I am looking for, would be nice if you list their websites in here.
