i'm asking here first and i'm going to go look at the extensions page but if anyone has any ideas on this can you let me know
basically i'm putting together a website where they'll like to be able to allow people to register and book appointments to come in to the shop - simple controls will be needed where we can set the length of the appointment then there needs to be some way to view in the backend and send an email out to the person who has booked ...
anyone know of anything?

I can recommend Appointment Booking Pro and Resource Booking Pro from Soft Ventures - www.softventures.com , they are commercial($49) but very solid.
Just be aware of the limitations:
