What software/tools to edit with?

Its been a while since I've done any joomal development and I had my hard drive take a dump on me. I had a good set of tools to edit the index.php / CSS files, etc. Any suggestions on good freeware to use for basic editing?

- If you are not using firebug then go get it. You won't be sorry, it is easy to edit the site on the fly and then go and update the files.

- As far as text editors for Windows go, I like EditPad Pro , works sweet.
