The best way for a multilingual site is too far away from joomla 1.5; with a combobox in every article, allowing to select the language, who can expect that JOOMLA 1.5 is, today, March 13, 2008, the worst choice? You can write an article in English, in Italian, in Spanish, the result is the same: don't care of language of the logged user, joomla engine simply ignore the language in the front-end, showing articles. Joomlafish! is another bad work, it's is not yet supporting joomla 1.5; in my company I must choice some other commercial content management system, my responsible started to hate me for the choice of joomla. We must restyle entire company portal, we would have choosen joomla 1.5, but we can't any longer wait for a multi-lingual joomla support.
