Trying to add Articles or Sections directly to Module Positions in Populus?

I have been trying to figure out how i can add content in the form of articles or sections to the front page in user module positions without having to add additional extensions that have their own selection methods. i have implemented a number of populus extensions and will add more overtime but i would like to be able to format my own "modules" with selective content from the site on the front page. does anyone know if there is a way to do this or if there is an extension that will assist me?
i have also had to insert the signal login module in a User position as the mod_login extension would not format correctly in populus and the cb_login would not let me access the site. it seemed to have expected that i pass my credentials in form the url and therefore did not work for me. if anyone has any ideas what is causing either of these issues i would appreciate the advice.
also, can anyone recommend a good calendar or custom forms/database extension that has been updgraded to 1.5?
