Integrating the Joomla Menu with PHPBB3

Posted 16 years 8 months ago
    • I have a site under construction at simjunkies.org/index.php  ; We are in the process of moving away from our SMF forum to PHPBB3. I have seen a number of sites using a cached version of the menu on their PHPBB forum.

I have a couple of questions about this. I use the mediamogul template. Would it be possible to put the Joomla menu including the news scroller from from the joomla site at the link above into a new phpbb forum?

I would like to have the menu and header at very least. I know it can be done, and I've read a few descriptions on how to do this. Unfortunately I've been unsuccessful up to this point. Have any of you done this? Is there a good tutorial somewhere that I'm missing? I'm new to coding, and even worse I'm new to Joomla and PHPBB3.

If you have any ideas, or can point me in a direction to get some assistance I would be grateful.

I don't know if it's against the rules to ask this, but I would be willing to pay someone here to move my SMF forum to PHPBB, set up the bridge, and implement the menu if that is an option. I could do it (With lots of time and reading) however at this point I'd rather pay one of the guys here to do it. (Again sorry if asking this was against the rules)

      Cheers,

      -Marcus

    • I'm new to this myself, so I'll offer my newbie advice...

This marriage between Joomla 1.5 and phpbb 3 is pretty new and just getting the two bridged is a milestone.

Over at RocketWerks there's a RC bridge complete and it's available for testing.

It's be a while before there s a stable release, but it works pretty well for now.

What many of us have done is bridge the two and run the forum in a wrapper.

This opens the forum in an inline frame and still allows you to choose which menu items you want to appear while the forum is displayed - as opposed to clicking on the forum link and having it open in that window or another.

One suggestion: if the forum is going to be wrapped in Joomla and not in a separate window, I would not use the left or right menu.

This will limit the width of the forum and users will have to use the scroll bar to read posts, navigate, etc.

Height is not an issue because you can set it manually to the height you want or use Auto.

One thing you'll want to do for sure is get the colors to match, changing the default prosilver blue to something that matches your site.

You can go here and colorize your template: beta.colorizeit.com/ and upload the files to your phpbb install.

Probably not exactly what you want, but before the bridge is finalized, I don't think we can expect further integration of the two, matching themes, custom menus, etc.

Anyway, if you follow the instructions for the bridge install EXACTLY it works on the first shot in about 15 minutes.

This may mean you need a fresh install of pbpbb to play with, but IMHO, it's worth the effort.

    • Thanks for the reply Jem. :)

I have tested the bridge and got it functioning. I've also tested the SMF to PHPBB3 converter and that test was mostly successful. I am very excited about moving away from SMF, and using the bridge.

As for the wrapper. Is it possible to wrap the phpbb3 forum and have it display it's unique links in the browser window?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'unique links'.

If you mean a hyperlink in a post, yes, the link opens in the frame...

I mean rather than seeing the wrapper link in the browser window you would see the unique forum links for posts, threads etc. If that could be done I would be satisfied with using a wrapper for now. :)

    • I think what Marcus is referring to is to see the real link so you can refer to it or copy paste it. I also had to remove my gallery2 installation out of a wrapper as I didn't know how to make the real url show in the browser's address field. I guess it may not be possible? ::M::

You said it. :) That's exactly what I mean. I require the ability for my users to copy and past links.

    • Nope, a wrapper doesn't do that.

So, if you want the ability to do that, for now linking the forum menu item to open in a new window / same window may be your best bet.

A few points to consider, if you really wanted to have it in a wrapper so it stays surrounded by Joomla menus, etc...

While in any given forum / topic, users can right click and open in a new window - this shows the actual path.

Users can use the Bookmark feature within phpbb.
