The only thing I haven't tested is installing phpbb in the Joomla DB.
Currently, I have on DB for Joomla, one for pbpbb.
Since I often 'blow things up' I'm not brave enough to try and see what happens.
But I'm curious to know if phpbb was installed in the Joomla DB if the full URL would show....
latest activity of phpbb forums can be placed on frontpage of a joomla site. Links can be copied and pasted so that it brings people to the wrapped forumtopic. deadsimple install and works like a charm, updated frequently.
I just checked out that Universal User Integration thing and it looks good, BUT, it says that it is only one way, in that it will only bring the users from the forum over into joomla, and not the other way around. Are there any solutions available so that when someone signs up on EITHER side, its integrated?
There are actually some good solutions posted on this site. The Rocketwerx one looks very promising although I haven't tried it myself. If you are using Joomla1.0.x and phpBB2.x, then CBconnector.com has a great solution that I have used successfully and my users love it too.
As for the header and menu, using phpBB3.0 does make it possible to include it. I will try to find the other post and the demo's that other users here have posted. It looks really good. I will be working on this myself here shortly and will keep checking back to either report what I'm doing, or to see what solutions you guys have come up with.
Here's another link I found following some of the other links posted here. It's a demo of one of the solutions posted:

Using "view source" should be helpful in both of these to help make your own template. Remember that links to style sheets and such from the Joomla header will need to be adjusted and possibly an absolute link since you are link to a directory that is outside of this one.
