Display different template based on browser type

    • I am interested to see if there is a way to get Joomla to use a different template based on the browser type that you are viewing with.

What I want to do is to have a different (simpler) template for IE6 users.
Is there a way to detect the browser type and to direct Joomla to a different template if using IE6?

    • All I would like to do is throw a warning...

"Hey you don't have IE7 or Firefox running....Our site is going to SUCK if you don't download one these two...."

Is there anyone willing to post what I would need to add to your index.php file to throw this message up as a person navigates to my homepage?

      THANKS>

You need something like a modified rokie6warn.js. Maybe Andy or someone else might be able to help :)

    • I realize the world of browser detection is a mad one right now --- and I also realize these RT themes templates are wonderful!

But -- recently some of the community sites I am developing are hitting an older generation computer user...I am putting up hunting and fishing websites and am finding tons of folks still with IE5.5 and other really old AOL versions that default to using Ie5 and stuff...

What I was hoping would be this ---

Just have a really simple text based template that would almost be right for mobile devices set up at

      http://mydomain_special.com

and have the sexier better version at

      mydomain.com

BUT -- at mydomain.com have a quick run of a javascript that searched for a Firefox version high enough ... or a GECKO version high enough and an IE version high enough before it allowed them in...

and if it failed -- it would just forward them over to the text version?

BUT both would use the same joomla database --- does this make sense?

I am certain I am reinventing the wheel here --- so just point me to the right research articles and please don't yell at me --- I am willing to do the research -- I just need direction.

      THANKS.

    • I don't like solutions like this myself. I do not like to be re-directed because i use a different browser. If you really need different sites for different browsers then make a static page and let the user choose which site to visit.

It's fun sometimes to visit some sites with Opera (set to emulate IE) and see what happens heh... If i change "mask as <browser>" to Firefox other stuff will load on the same site...
