Using Custom Modules and Adding 'Read More...' to Custom Modules

Posted 17 years 3 weeks ago
• I don't know if this is a question or a solution; it works for me but is it the 'right way'.

There may be some ‘mistakes’ it what I say because I don’t completely understand Joomla quite yet…

When using ‘Read more...’ in regular articles, clicking on ‘Read more…’ opens the article in the target window.

However, when adding ‘Read more…’ to Custom Modules I found the link has to be made to a published article.

Here’s the situation…

I have several Top Menu items:

Home / Forum / Tutorials / Downloads / About / Contact

I've created about a dozen or so Custom Modules and published them to various Top Menu items. I’m using them as short bits of information or instructions, most of them not worthy of a full article. Some of the Custom Modules warrant a read more which need to be linked to an Article published to a Menu Item.

Here’s the problem…

I don’t want them to appear on a Menu for uses to browse, since the ‘Read more…’ content comes from Custom Modules on different Top Menu items the page would contain a whole list of mismatched items…

Here’s what I did…

Created a Category ‘Module Articles’
Created the Module Articles I needed.
Created a Menu Item ‘Module Articles’ as a Category List Layout

I can toggle the ‘Module Articles’ menu on and off (published / unpublished) to see the path to the menu and the article for linking the ‘Read more…’ in a custom Module.

Now for example, if a user is on the Contact menu, as usual, the Contact menu is highlighted. If they see a module that has a ‘Read more…’ and they click on it, the article opens on ‘that page’ so they can read more.

Actually what happens is they are taken to that article on the Module Articles page, but since the Module Article menu is not published they don’t see the menu change, or see all the other Module Articles.

During this time, the Contact menu is not highlighted – and the Module Article menu would be if it was published… Anyway, clicking on Back, or Contact takes them right back to where they were…

Anyway, it works for me – if you can understand what I did and find it useful, cheers!

If I took the LONG way around this problem and there’s an easier or ‘right way’ to do it, please let me know.

• Thank you so much. Exactly what I needed. I was kinda toying with the idea of having a hiding menu and pointing the inside pages to the menu.

Thanks heaps :)
