    • Hi guys, I need some suggestions for web hosting. I had been using a dedicated win server that I was given free access too but it didn't have any kind of control panel so I had to install php and mysql and manage all the dns stuff on my own. Something happend to the php install and also, I really wanted to use user friendly URLS so I switched to 1and1.

Turns out that was a big mistake because I didn't read the part that says mysql is limited to 100mb and I'm going to go over anyday. On top of that they seem to be pullin one over on me with their domain offer.

I was using awstats on my win hosting so I have logs that go back 4 years, it would be cool to find a host that uses awstats so I could bring over my old stats.

      linux is a must
server needs to be in the US, no specific region (in in cali)
      shell access prefered
      .htaccess
mysql with no limit on db size or atleast a couple hundred mb?
      support for multiple websites
multiple ftp accounts and email etc.

      $10-$20/mo hosting

      First hand recommendation preferred.

One more thing, good dns support. I've had hosting before where you could only point a subdomain to a different directory. I need to either be able to use my own dns server or use theirs with full control.

    • I have been very happy with Hostgator. I think they could meet most if not all of your requirements.
      • mySQL database are not restricted in number or size
      • linux
      • based in Texas
      • Shell access on request
      • .htaccess is fine
      • multiple website okay and multiple domains okay except the cheapest plan
      • unrestricted ftp and email
      • awstats
      • Plans at 5.95/7.95/12.95
      • Regarding DNS--they will set up a wildcard DNS for your domain on request to deal with subdomains. They are competent and responsive.

Their support is good although sometimes an issue needs to work its way up to higher levels of support. They have gone above and beyond for me when I needed it.

Just wanted to add, you get control over DNS settings with the reseller account. That gives you a WebHostManager interface. Reseller accounts start at 24.95--just beyond the $20 limit. Honestly, I believe that Tech support can take care of your needs with a regular account.

    • I was looking at hostgator today after a quick google search (i think for cpanel hosts). I'll email them specific questions about my dns needs.

How reliable is their service? Do you find you site getting sluggish during certain hours?

My experience has been positive. Frankly, I have moved on to one of their dedicated servers, but things worked well when I had a reseller account, and our school has a shared account too. Up time was excellent and I never really noticed any speed issues that I could attribute to them.

      Check out their user forum:
