    Another Mambo Fork

Posted 16 years 11 months ago
    • First there was Mambo,
      then Mambo and Joomla,
      then Mambo, Joomla and Elxis.
And now... Mambo, Joomla, Elxis and MiaCMS

      Good luck to them.

    • Nice. They would be well-served using an RT template on that site, though. :)

    • Yeah he was.

Pretty sad really. Mambo could have been massive if was done well from the beginning... all those extremely talented individuals split up. I wonder.. what if the core teams from the 4 CMS's could come together again (with no politics or agendas.. just talent, skills and drive). In this dream of mine... Joomla grows to be a more powerful CMS then Drupal and a better blog then WP. :o ::)

It's a pity they couldn't fork the next version of Mambo because it has not yet been made GPL. Built on cakephp (with the pros and cons that come with that), I hear it was looking real sweet... a real alternative for 1.5 (aside from the diversity of extensions J has). The best part for me is no tables natively.

      Anyway, thats that.

    • Very enlighting stuff there, you know about 4 years ago I never even heard of a CMS, I was virtually making my own CMS systems for my clients, basically it was FCKEditor (or something similiar) that I would build into an "ADMIN" section and allow them to change the entire page.

Very crude to say the least, almost daily I was fixing their mess ups. It got very tiring, well I remember one day I did a search or something for a different type of editor and came across Xoops. This was the most amazing thing I had ever seen, someone had actually done what I was trying to do. I downloaded and played with it for awhile then I noticed other people talking about other CMS programs. So my search begain.

Well, I eventually ended up on switching to PHP from ASP then a Fantastico pointed me to Mambo, well it goes from there.

Really great stuff, I do like the icons and menu functionality of that MiaCMS I may have to make an admin template with something like that.

    • nice dream,, but the nightmare is that I have come realize that these starts and stops ,, splits and forks always leave us non-coder types in a lurch..... whole sites that are bridged together, patched - up and using forked this, that and the other become frozen in time becasue developments stop, or fork or get abandoned only to get picked up by a person that wants to re-sell it.....and then it wont work with everything else

keeping up with all of how to puzzle piece a community site together with functionality is a full time job LOL

so your dream sounds good,, would love a fully intergrated CMS with all the bells and whistles ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ahhhh but its only a dream!

    • Good point CG Icon.

Mambo users now have to choose which way to go.. stay with Mambo, or move to Mia. It's the same choice that had to be made by users and developers back when Joomla forked. Time has proven that the users who moved made the right choice... although to be fair, users who stayed with Mambo were not "dropped" or left with an unsupported CMS, although that may be true for some of the extensions they used.

    • yea.. mambo is fairly "dry".......

if Joomla is the "prom date"... mambo is the "Prom Dates DAD"........... yuk...

Im constantly on the lookout for a more systems approach with all the CMS' out there....

I still think Joomla is the one that will get their someday....... just not yet

the latest VB with its new "community builder type features" built in ... a long with its portal and photo post and blog systems is looking very very sweet....rock solid as well.... yes it is 300 give or take for alll those features mentioned above,,, but it is SOLID
