legal question about altering photos

  • legal question about altering photos

    • As an example, let's say I wanted to photshop an image of a political figure and alter it in a way that might be embarassing to the targeted person. What would be the legalities that I should be concerned about?

    • Hi Bryan, just to let you know that your not talking with the uninformed here, I owned an ad agency for 13 years and continue to work with photographers and deal with those legal issues everyday.

You have three issues here, the person, photo and the use.

If the person is a public individual (politicians are), it is legal for you to do a parody or a humorous version of them - even if it's embarrassing.

As for the photo, whether you shot the photo or if you lifted it from the web, you can do whatever you like to it HOWEVER...

If you are publishing it as part of an article or on a public message board, you'll run into copyright issues by the person that shot the photo. They may never know your use, but you are legally liable for infringing on their copyright if you do that.

There are a few other variables, but since I don't know the whole of your situation, I will have to hear any other question you may have.
