Basics on SSL

    • I've designed a few websites the old hard way and one with Joomla!. I seem to be getting serious about doing more sites. I've just started designing a store using Virtuemart. This is my first store and I don't know much about SSL. From what I've seen, looks like most of the store sites use http: for most of the work and just https: for "checkout" and "my account". The man I'm designing the store for is insisting that the whole site needs to be on https:

Can you all give me some basics on SSL? Pros and cons on having the whole site https: versus using both as needed.

      Thanks!

    • Just use htaccess to redirect all URLS to the HTTPS version, then set the live URL as the HTTPS version

    • SSL pages demand more of the server processor power and may load more slowly. On the upside, the data is encrypted between the server and the client.

That is why most shopping carts are set by default to use SSL for Checkout and My Account.
