Joomla 1.5 "Preview" Question

I can't seem to find the answer to this, so hopefully this question is not a repeat.
When I am re-designing a website, using Joomla 1.0+, I can keep the original index.html in place, and I can preview the joomla site by viewing domain.com/index.php
However, with joomla 1.5, the "preview" link from the backend shows only the index.html file.
Is there a way to preview the domain.com/index.php without having to view it in wrapper through the administration side? or click the "preview" link in the administrative area and see the index.php page (even if offline).
Am I making any sense?
Any advice you can give would be much appreciated.

Right click Preview - open in a new Tab / Window?
Open a separate browser with for the front end, edit the back end, refresh the front end?
Simple unless I'm missing something....
