Same for me, one of my providers answered it was not possible to change this setting and that the solution was to choose a virtual server or a dedicated server.
But another provider did the change at once. - Yves

Did you try a php.ini over-ride before coughing up the cash for a vitual or dedicated server? I had to talk to many people with tech support before I got the solution. It seems that many support people will give a quick anwer just to close the ticket.
