Different Button Style for Menu Items

I am an intermediate experienced Joomla user (noob for css, php, and html) and was wanting to incorporate something new to my websaite that I haven't been able to find in any forums anywhere so far.
Basically, I would like to highlight a particular menu item by making the button a different color from the rest of have it flash a diferent color. I know that with .gif images you can make several images that scroll, to make like a flashing image, but how do I incorporate something like that into Joomla?
Is it possible to create a script that could have a "button suffix" (which could allow me to select different button stlyes) when adding items to a menu?
