Have a forum? Which one is best and why?

    • I have not decided yet.
I know fireboard is about to have an upgrade to 2.0 - and phpbb has a nice feature where you can add the latests posts from the forum to your main site.

What do you use and why? Do you like it or have you considered changing?

Add any you don't see as well. I just figured out this is a simplemachines forum ::)

    • VB is best...then SMF. They both make it easy to see updated topics and only remove from the view the topics which you have read. They are easier to navigate than most and both look good "out of the box."

      Can't stand PhpBB.

    • I've seen VB around as well.

I've been looking at everyones codes on their joomla sites to figure out what's what.

My forum is going to be a paid members forum. I have just looked into amember, but I'm open to what ever else is out there on the rest of it.

Thanks jomaco1, I will look into your suggestions.

      Anyone else?

    • I voted for phpBB; it integrates well with Joomla using RoKBridge, and as rumor has it will be easy to skin with RT templates in the near future.
    • Thanks,

Hmm, this is tempting, as I want to match my forum with the site as well as a wp blog. I'll have to look at the rumors. Thanks for the input.

If you're going to charge for membership, it will be worth the cost of $160 for the VB license. If you reallly need amember, it has plugins for VB, SMF and Joomla which makes it easy to add members using a common bridge and single sign-in.

    • if your going to charge a membership then your members will expect a solid board that is feature rich ( I would ) that factors out Fireboard

VB is the best but is commercial

of the free lic schemes forums... SMF is the best followed by PHPBB3.........but SMF and Joomla intergration has seen better days.. ( if you MUST have SMF,, look into mambo)

      that leaves PHPBB3

(all of this is my opinion)

Last year I joined a membership site that used fireboard and I LOVED the way it looked. I have a full perspective from a member's POV, so I can't dump FB just yet.
