section/category blog parameters have no effect

Hi, I'm new to Joomla, so maybe this isn't a template specific problem, but I can't get the basic parameters to take effect on my site.
I'm using the hivemind template and everything else seems to work fine...just can't get the section or category blog to take effect.
I'll describe what I'm doing - maybe a basic mistake?: Creating a menu item - in this case 'company news'. It's parent item is 'home'.
Basic Parameters - section: news content
Description hide
Description image: hide
# Leading 1
# Intro 4
Columns 1
# Links 4
I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give - thanks in advance,
