Multiple sites, same template, Please help

  • Multiple sites, same template, Please help

Posted 16 years 1 month ago
    • I've been waiting for and answer for this a while now. I want to take one template and use it for about four sites. The home page information would be the same, however I want to make one page unique from the others. (example, a news site, however the local news for one city would be different than another city) I want each site to have a unique url. Would I install the templates on seperate urls. Or can I use a menu function to control what a person sees in each city. (I just need one page of the site to be unique to the local area.) I know someone has done this before. Please help.

    • Hi Benny

Is each website for separate companies/organisation? If the answer is no then are you not better to organise the information in a different way - ie using Joomla CMS to its full effect. You could then use subdomains to get direct access eg city1.yourdomain.com The reason for asking is that maintaining 1 website is infinitely easier than maintaining multiple sites

If you must go for multiple sites then the easiest way is to create one website, then install a backup package, back up the site, and copy the backup file and install it at the four separate locations.

      Hope that helps

    • Thanks again. Also My web host installed my joomla for me. However, I uploaded the template, but I can't upload the extensions and the other zip file. I keep getting "xml unable to install package" error. What can I do. I see the template when I made it my default, however the extensions and other info are not there.

    • Have a look through the joomla extensions directory - you will see a section under back up. From memory - I think the most popular free extension is Joomla Pack - however speaking from (bad) experience, back up is something that must be taken seriously. I paid the for commercial Xcloner (from Joomla Plug) and it was excellent. I have mentioned them a few times in these forums - no affiliation just happy to put in a good word for a very good product.

XCloner creates a single zip (or tar) archive of your entire site. You then move that arcchive to where you want the new site to be deployed and run the restore script. It really is super easy.

    • Ok, I tried the global confing thing. It didn't work. The exact message I get is "Couldnot find XML setup file in package". I am trying to upload the extension for a template. Can anyone help.

What do you mean by an extension for a template ? Which one ?
