Alright, so I've been searching around the forums here and I found a post that was pretty old so I didn't want to be a forum necro and dig it back out.
I'm building a new community site based on a new MMO, and was wondering what you guys would recommend as a good free forum software package.
I saw the arguments before of phpbb3 and SMF, which I am confused on which one to go with. So what would you guys recommend in this sense. I'll even take suggestions for others. I noticed the guys here at RocketTheme were talking about having phpbb3 replace the current SMF forums when it was originally brought up but I notice now that you guys are still using SMF. So what would you recommend?

Well that definitely answers that question, would you suggest bridged or standalone and if I go standalone will the accounts be able to be the same for logging into the site AND forum?
And finally just how around the corner are we talking?

You would have to 'bridge' Joomla and phpbb3 to have "the accounts be able to be the sme for logging into the site AND forum." And wrapping the forums into the site is much more professional to me...and the way to incorparate the upcoming RT phpbb3 themes.
You could download the RokBridge and phbb3 and play with it on a local install...though still in pre-release status, it worked perfectly for me and most...give it a go.
Thanks, I'll look into RokBridge. It was my understanding from the Joomla site that we shouldn't wrap our forums into the site because it slowed things down a lot. I would assume if you wrap in then everything seems to be working at a decent speed?

Need some help with installing the RokBridge... got to...
Install the user and authentication plugins using the Joomla! 1.5 backend.
Enable both plugins and check that their RokBridge Base Path parameter points to the base path of your 'bridge' installation, relative to your site root. By default this value should be forum.
Extract the phpBB3-authentication.tar.gz into your phpBB3 root director (eg. /public_html/joomla/distribution). It should add a file called auth_joomla.php to the /public_html/joomla/distribution/includes/auth/ directory.
and now I am lost. Tried the php file said its not recognized tried the xml file says the same thing. What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks. I did not realize there was a forum for that, I'm still so very new to all of everything, trying to make the biggest community site I have done out of my very first Joomla! install.
I figured out the problem btw i was unpacking the .tar.gz file and you don't need to do that.
