Migrating to Joomla 1.5 from 1.x

    • Hi all,

I've been reading online stuff for an hour now about the migration,
and I'm more scared than ever!

I wish there was a simple tool for 'upgrading' but hey

I'm looking to upgrade all of my rockettheme installs,
so do I just use the rocket launcher for joomla 1.5 in a seperate directory, and then import the tables from the
joomla 1.x install created by the migration tool?

Once that's tested, I delete the old install, move the new install to the old folder and edit config and that's it?

Are template files the same? As in, can I just copy in the old template folder with the custom images?

I'm using a shared database for several joomla installs and a mediawiki install,
will the 'auto migration' thing choose the ones only for the install I'm talking about?

Also, how will the fireboard be affected?

      Thanks!

    • Just be sure to backup everything.
Sorry I don't have any more advice. :-\

    • hi!

i migrated my old site from 1.0.15 to 1.5 a few months ago and i was kind of scared as well.
after backing everything up i started my mission on a local copy of my site for testing.

one thing you really have to be careful about is the database.
especially when you are using the same database for several joomla installs. (that cant be a good thing to do!!)

after i had a local copy of my 1.0 site and installing the migration tool, i got a copy of my database to use it later in the 1.5. install.
while running the 1.5 install in a subfolder i got to the point where asked for the database. i loaded the migration script and pointed to the database that i got before through the migration tool.

when i had finished the whole install, the 1.5 site was running ok, only with minor issues, but the 1.0 install got DESTROYED.
i guess the reason was, that the old 1.0 database got overwritten by the new 1.5 database, since it was having the exact same name. i dont know if there is a way to prevent this from happening.

in the new 1.5 install i had to delete my 3rd party components, because they were not working.
i also installed the 1.5 version of my template (vortex) and overwrote the imagefolder and template.css file.
i am not sure if that way is recommended, but it worked for me.

i have 2 more sites that i will migrate soon.

it is strongly recommend to backup EVERYTHING and try the whole procedure on a local server, AWAY from your live site(s) and then see what happens. it is a good learning experience and you will be proud once you get it done.

hope that could help, ;) kat

    • So if I just do a new 1.5 install of the same rockettheme with a different pre-fix on the new site? (adding the old tables put out by the component)

Then just slide over the template folder, that'll do the trick?

      Does that include fireboard?
