Internet Explorer (IE) History, Versions, Release Dates, etc.

There are tons of questions about Internet Explorer, why certain things don't work, why things operate different, what updates are issued, and most of all, why do web developers hate it >.
Here's some links explaining a little more about each version taken from wikipedia and also showing the IE6 Release Dates...way back in the year 2001. Yes it is time to move one, but how do you get your users to do it?
Read the rest of this article pertaining to Gmail and how IE6 was an outcast even there:
The newest version of Gmail pushes modern browser technology to the limit, so initially we weren't able to make it available to those of you who use IE6. Because it was released way back in 2001, IE6 wasn't able to handle the complexity of the new code in a way that met our performance and stability goals...

Here's a link that you can give to anyone insisting on using IE6 but that may need updates.
This is the Microsoft page for IE updates which means that you have to be using IE to open it!
Then again, you only need this page if you're using IE, so I guess it's not all that bad.
Updates for web browsers are VERY HIGHLY recommended for security reasons. If you ever notice an influx of spam on your locally installed email client or random settings changing, there is a very good chance that a security hole in your browser version was compromised at some point.
There is no such thing as a permanently safe browser!!! They will all need updates from time to time, so don't hesitate to install them.
I've found that the biggest reason people use IE6, at least in my interaction with the few people that visit my sites, is that they have it on their work computer and are at the mercy of their IT department when it comes to installations or updates.
The others use it (IE6) because they don't know how to use their computer to begin with.
