Joomunity is already light years ahead of community builder and still has a lot of potential. The only drawback is that it's still in beta and many areas are lacking polish. I am currently implementing it on a social site I am building but it's not something I'm ready to show off. If you'd like to see Joomunity in action, you can either create an account at www.joomunity.org or login with their demo account. I can confirm that everything works the way it does on their site. And a bit of advice if you choose to install Joomunity. Make sure you have the latest version of PHP running on your host and you may have to install it manually since the auto-installers don't always work.

Something new to add to this. Joomunity decided to go commercial with almost all their applications. The total price tag doesn't seem cheap either. I'm not sure it's worth shelling out that much money for beta software when they only have a couple devs and no proven track record. Also, since the time of my original post, I have converted my site over to JomSocial and I am quite pleased. If you're looking to build a social network then that would be the component I recommend.

      Jim

    • I have JomSocial and I'm happy, but not overwhelmed with joy. I don't think JomSocial is anywhere near RC, it's definitely Beta and cost a good chunk of change. I've been on the help forums too posting issues and get replies back that it's my fault something didn't work, then log back in a couple days later to see that the issue was fixed in the newest release.

Don't get me wrong, I still like it and will continue to use it, but I think everything else out there can give it a run for it's money whatever level it's at.

    • I do recommend it over CB and I think it's a good product. To do it all again, I'd still go with it.

Part of the frustrations were the default configuration settings don't take at all. User Profiles are open to everyone regardless of what you set the default settings too. This doesn't change until the user goes in and sets them individually. This was an issue because people wanted to post phone numbers and stuff and then forgot to set permissions.

They are running jQuery but in "no conflict" mode and say it shouldn't interfere with mootools, but there are subtle issues with it.

Other items like when deleting a user from the Joomla User Manager, then having their info left over in the JomSocial datatables and turning up as errors in searches. (This was was just recently fixed in the last few days by issue of a plugin. It doesn't work on any you've already deleted so you still have to traverse through the tables and clean up manually). I thought this was a big one for them to forget when they are charging $150.

Once in a while things just don't parse right when the page loads. The tooltips will be missing all their styling or links in the recent activities will lead to the wrong users profile. This is rare and I don't know what would cause it, but it's been reported and ignored by them. They told me there was something wrong with Joomla, not their system.

Long story short, it is better than anything else out there and users like it a lot more because of it's strong resemblance to everything else they're used to. I think it will get stronger as it grows too.

Last thing that bugged me was that their own registration link is buried in like 10 different places so if you wanted to use Joomla's or even phpBB3's, it's near impossible to find every place they have a "Register Here" link. I gave up and just redirected Joomla's and phpBB3's over to JomSocial's because it was a lot less work that way.
