I sort of hate that one of my 1st posts on this forum will probably get censored given that I don't see other posts of this ilk here, but I also don't see anything in the rules or discussion that state that it's totally inappropriate.
The context:
I'm returning to the technology side of the world after a ~6 year hiatus (I'm formerly Bell Labs, AT&T, Lucent, Avaya, etc.) and am excited and intrigued by all the ways that it appears that folks can make a living in the current world of the web (vastly changed from ~95 when I was last active in programming and web site development). I have about 6-8 web sites I'm actively working on. Actually, learning on is more accurately as I've offered my services either free or greatly reduced rates to try to accomplish something useful while I learn doing sites for organizations I belong to, relatives, friends, etc.
Eventually, I'd like to make a reasonable living off some of what I do...
I'd love to learn from others how you've made a living at this.
The poll:
So, I've posted a poll where I'd like to see the PRIMARY way you make money on the web.
Definitions I'm presuming:
Turnkey = total web solutions - might include hosting, e-commerce support, in addition to web site development, etc.
Fixed price contracts = any sort of effort for which a fixed price is negotiated
Hourly charge = charge by time and expense. I'd also love to know your hourly rate. Mine is $40 an hour if I pretty much know what I'm doing, much less if it's new to me, a little more if I really don't want to do the work.
Products/services = could include widgets, templates, software, ironing boards, whatever but you have some sort of web presence you support to sell that stuff
None of the above = includes charity sites you don't make money on, it's a hobby, etc.
I can see where some interesting other and more refined polls could also be offered here if this post survives and is of an interest.
