I’m using the MetaMorph Joomla Template and need to be able to make forms to capture and/or show data. Normally I would make a form then form method post the entered data to a script that would parse the data and do something like update a table, run a query, send mail, etc.
Being new to Joomla I’m having trouble finding where the scripts are that the forms post to. I’m told I will need to install a “form” application like Breezing Forms or Chrono Forms. Kind of feels like I’m working on code inside an isolation box which requires me to use robotic arms.
Two Questions:
Is it possible/practical for me to make my forms in Dreamweaver/FrontPage, post the data to a script that uses that data in a table or query? If so, how do I do it?
If I must use a forms application which one would you recommend?
Basically you gave the answer yourself. Chronoforms is the way to go, you can create your form in say DreamWeaver. All that needs to be done is to remove <form> </form> from DreamWeaver and paste into ChronoForms.
Those are the basics. Next to that, ChronoForms offers an extensive user forum where I think all your questions related to scripts etc. are answered.
...or check out (you knew this was coming, JEM ) Fabrik, which will do all that for you without having to build them in Dreamweaver and paste the code into Chrono.
There are no components out there that do what Fabrik does when it comes to queries and tables; LQM allows for filters/query, but also requires STRONG SQL skills...creating a Fabrik form, a styled table with filters/pre-filters/calculations/search fields/injected JS/bells/whistles takes about 15 minutes.
There's also a nice looking 'Joomla forms' component (a.k.a. Phil Taylor?) I played with which seemed nice. Support, however, so I hear, is not so nice...but Phil has a demo of the front and backend on his site...worth a look if you go the paid route:
