[SOLVEDI need HELP / direction: upgrading Apache 2.0 to 2.2

Posted 16 years 2 months ago
    • Upon a wonderful Rocketter suggestion, I am going to use VirtualMart on my new MixxMag website. I have been reading up (book AND virtualmart website) about how to best go about this. On the virtualmart website, it says the following:

VirtueMart has the following System Requirements:
      Apache 1.3.19 or above - www.apache.org , recommended: Apache 2.2.x
      PHP 4.2.x or above - www.php.net , recommended: PHP 5.2.x
      MySQL 3.23.x or above - www.mysql.com , recommended: MySQL 5.0.x
      Joomla! 1.0.x, 1.5.x or Mambo (>= 4.6.2), recommended: Joomla! 1.0.x

My setup includes or exceeds all of the recommendation EXCEPT one: I am using MAMP (working on a up-to-date Mac) and the Apache version bundled with WAMP is version 2.0.59.

The latest version of Apache from their site is 2.2.11. However, this is the page for installation of the upgrade:
      virtuemart.net/documentation/User_Manual/Installation.html

After reading these instructions carefully, I am terrified to attempt this. I simply don't know nearly enough about any of it to do this competently. Basically, reading that instruction page was like me reading ancient Greek - I understood almost none of it.

Getting my MAMP, MySQL, and all of the other things loaded properly and working was one of my biggest challenges with doing Joomla. One of the main reasons that I decided to go with RocketTheme was that I felt that I would do better with a pre-built theme rather than trying to load/ build my own, when I AM so new to all of this.

I am using godaddy.com as my online server, and I have not yet checked to see which Apache version godaddy has, but it is where I will go next. I was hoping to load virtualmart onto my local server first, so that I could work with it and start to understand it before I went to my online server. However, I'm now concerned with the Apache version issue.

Input on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks!

    • hi,

not a direct solution to your WAMP question, how about using XAMPP? Because I am using it and familiar with it.
      www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-macosx.html

the latest version of XAMPP comes with Apache 2.2.9

also if you are using shared hosting, it is impossible for you to upgrade the apache. it will need root access.

    • Oh dear ....

Admittedly, this is the GoDaddy root domain - not one of their hosting boxes (anyone have godaddy domain I can query?) GoDaddy is being served by Microsoft IIS 6.0.

And if you intend to use Virtuemart alongside ANY other component, beware - in fact it doesn't even like working with some of the mootools-based enhancements employed in RocketTheme templates (forget using RokSlideshow for instance). DO NOT use the latest version of Virtuemart (1.1.13) - Internet Exploder flaty refuses to open it.

If you would not refer to your JS / HTML / PHP skills as ADVANCED, I'd stronly recommend that you look for another cart - Virtuemart is going to run you in circles while you try to track down and fix all the bugs in its components and modules.

    • BLESS YOU Ragdata!!!

I have held off doing ANYTHING because it was starting to wig me OUT. My godaddy is Linux, and I don't use IE at all, but I know that there are all sorts of IE issues around and I am a RANK beginner in all of this.

I don't use XAMMP because I am working off my Mac (my PC is too old to handle this work) and I had MAJOR issues getting my Apache to run using XAMPP (I tried - multiple times).

I only have about 10 products and will never have many more than that (maybe 25 total). My products also have very limited choices as far as color, size, etc, and we manufacture them ourselves.

I need something simpler, but functional and that takes all major credit cards. I'm going to leave VirtueMart alone for now. I just can't go through another round of problems.

Thanks SO much about the warning...I'm off to see what else I can come up with.

      You people are GREAT!
