    • I don't confess to know much about this component apart from it does a great job of converting your URLs into something that search engines like. I recently upgraded my forum from fireboard to Kunena. SH404SEF worked greater on the fireboard forum but not on Kunena. Anyway somebody came up with the plug-ins that now makes SH404SEF worked on Kunena. After I'd finished I was having real problems until I went into SH404SEF and purged about 19,000 URLs. The website now seems to be running quicker. Do you think that not purging URLs for such a long time slowed the web site down? I'm just wondering whether I should do this on a regular basis?

    • It certainly would slow your site down. Rather than purging your URLs regularly, I'd advise that you tell sh404SEF to ignore your forums (you can do this in the sh404SEF config manager).

    • Thanks for the expedient reply (that's why I like this forum :cheesy: )

Okay before I do this, it's not going to mess my forum up is it?

    • It shouldn't ... it should just mean that your forums now have the long, variable-filled URLs. You MAY want to make sure that your links into the forum from elsewhere on your site take the long variable-filled form if you find problems. You can do this by creating a manual link for menu items leading to your forums (use the 'External Link' option in your menu manager).

I've done this myself when I discovered that Virtuemart bugs out in certain places when using SEF URLs (surprise surprise).

    • Thanks for that. I think everything seems to be working okay now. I have got an awful lot of external links coming in from various different websites. Thankfully most of them are linked to the actual website and not the forum. However there are a few that are linked to the forum. What I did notice was that even if you did follow a URL that no longer existed, you still arrived at the website, okay under 404 error, but at least you were still on the website, the homepage to be exact. So actually I wasn't losing any traffic, they just weren't arriving at the correct place.

    • Excellent ... you COULD go through a process of making sure that those incoming links to your forums have a 301 entry in sh404SEF - but this could be more trouble than it's worth considering the number of pages and the fact that traffic is still arriving at a page on your site.

    • I think I will leave things be for the moment. Like I said before I don't really understand the programme because I've not used it apart from just installing and relying on a default settings. So am a little reluctant to start changing things around, if it ain't broke, it doesn't need fixing, that's my philosophy
