My 11 yr son's FUN project. (This has nothing to do with Computers. )
Posted 18 years 5 months ago
But... I figured somebody might know the answer.....and it will give me a break from computer work for a bit.
I'll do my best to describe what I'm trying to do...
Image a circle of cardboard attached to a top. You are looking down at the top and cardboard. The cardboard has a bunch of dots on it that don't look like anything when the top is motionless. But, when the top spins, the placement of the dots and the rotation...cause an image to appear.
If you know what I'm talking about.... can you tell me what I would "google' on to see how it's done?
My 11 year old has a project he's working on. Being able to do the thing described above would be really useful...
not to mention fun....
anybody know?

Would it be a Thaumatrope? Another helpful term might be "persistence of vision."
Here's one place to check. Hope it helps - or at least gives you something to start with and might take you where you need to go. Have had my own share of projects with my own son. Good luck!

I knew someone would point me in the right direction...
Yes... 'persistence of vision' is what causes the effect.
I kept googling "spinning disk image thingie" and "magically creates images when wheel is spinning" and stuff like that ..hahahahaha
Most of the spinning image results I got had to do with tequila, worms and Kamakazi Shooters!
I looked at the other 'scopes' as well..and I think that Thaumatrope is going to be my best shot.
