    password protecting folders

    • I am trying to password protect folders that are not in Joomla but directly under the public_html folder which is where Joomla is installed.

      For some reason, when I set up .htaccess password protection on a folder not part of joomla and browse to it from the website, it gives me a Jooomla "you are not authorized to view this page. Please log in." message.

      I am using the MediaMogul template but I don't think this problem has anything to do with the template which is why I am posting under the general discussion.

      Any ideas or pointers will help!

      Basically, I am simply trying to upload some videos, documents, etc. to the site to share with my team. I don't want public access to these.

      I am sure I could upload these via Joomla as well but I haven't done that before and I am just lazy so I simply created a directory in the website and uploaded if there. I am password protecting that folder via feature in the hosting control panel.

      But when i browse to the URL - www.simplosys.com/training_videos . it shows me a Joomla "you are not authorized to view this page. Please log in." message.

      At this point, i am open to any suggestions to be able to share these videos and large docs with my team.

    • Why not use a component like DocMan?

      You and your team can upload files and share them with each other.

      You can set the permissions so that users must be registered or part of a group to view / upload / download files.

    • DocMan is for files, so if you want to upload video files to exchange, that's one thing.


      If you want to upload and share (view on the web) videos, you should look for a 3rd party video component.

    • Right now, I create my vidoes in camtasia studio and it outputs a neat set of files. When I upload it to a folder in my hosting account, I am able to view those videos. Works great!

      Except that I can't password protect that folder because Joomla thinks this folder is part of the Joomla site when it's not!

      Thanks for your idea JEM, but it sounds like I need neither a Video component nor DocMan, just a way to figure out how to exclude a certain folder from the blessings of the Joomla .htaccess.

    • Actually, just occured to me, can I use a video plugin like RokBox or Mgmedia2 to share videos with my team? It needs to be available only to certain logged in users. Is that possible?

    • You may need some type of ALC (Access Level Control) component.

      You can use your Camtasia videos as they are now by creating Menu Items that are visible only to users of a particular group.

      An ALC component adds levels to Joomla's limited Public/Registered/Special configuration.

      For example, you can create a group called 'Team', and add you team members to it.

      The team members are just registered users, but they have access to Menu Items for content assigned only to team members...

      But they are still accessible directly via the URL. That's what I am trying to prevent.
