Joomla's Contact List formatting

Hey everyone,
does anyone have any advice, tips, direction, for formatting Joomla's default Contact List page? This is something that has stumped me for awhile now; the contact list page is so flat and uninspired and there has to be a way to spice it up using a module, component, or just some fancy CSS styling...
anyone have any advice? (I'm working on a website where I need to display contact information for a bunch of retail locations, and would like to make the listing and contact pages 'pop')

is the information going to be static?
how about creating a new page without actually using the contacts component. then use the contacts component for specifically sending the email
i know what you mean about the list format - so i often, when there are a few contacts, don't use it and just create my own page - www.c3p0.se - sweden
