Multiple template themes?

    • Hi all,

This might be a really dumb question, but that never stopped me before :)

Can you use more than one template for a single Joomla site - ie. a theme that has a different template for the home page and lower level pages? If so how come no one ever seems to do this?

      Thanks for your thoughts.

    • I'm not an expert, but i don't see how that would be possible - feel free to correct me if I am wrong!

You can however create different colours for different pages, but I'm sure that you know that. (like the Trooper template does different colours for different pages).

      Cheers!

    • actually you can use different templates on different menu items. In the template manager you assign one template as default, and then assign the other templates to certain menu items in the 'template details' pages. The main purpose of this is to create different 'looks' for different areas of your site and then assigning the different versions of the template to the different sections. It's a bit of a pain, but can end up with a pretty neat effect.

    • Thanks for the quick replies.

I assumed it could be done - just no one seems to do it. I ask because a lot of the clients I work with have sites with vastly different needs for various sections... particularly the home page vs. lower level pages.

So, the latter part of my question, "how come no one ever seems to do this" - I guess it's because it's too much of a hassle?

      Thanks

    • 1. It could confuse visitors - Not good for accessibility
      2. Branding. Always best to have a consistent look throughout the site so people get to remember the look/brand.... Imagine if every McDonalds outlet had a different looking "M" device and a different color scheme for the restaurant... or if Ronald McDonald was dressed as a Farmer, a clown, an executive, a pilot, or a woman depending on what the franchise owner preferred?

IMO better to set different Header images for each different section of the site, but use the same template throughout.... or go the trooper or joomla.org way.

    • GollumX - I agree with you on both points.

But, more than one template doesn't mean the branding would not be consistent or fairly easy to understand. I'm thinking about multiple templates in the way www.cisco.com , www.ibm.com , www.hp.com , or www.oracle.com need more than one template to deal with the various types of content they have.

Many larger sites use more than one type of layout template to meet the needs of the content they display.
