Best login/registration module with Captcha
Posted 15 years 10 months ago
I have been getting a lot of fake registrations on my site at
www.icponline.org
, and I am spending a fair bit of time each day deleting them. What is the best login/registration module that uses Captcha or a similar bot deterrent device?
Don't worry, you are not alone. I have recently started using the following to stop these automated registrations. Since I installed it, I haven't had a single "fake registration"
The beauty with this component is totally free, installs extremely easily, you don't need to do any configuration. The only thing you need to do is register for a couple of keys that get the thing working. You basically register, and then you are given a couple of keys that you paste into the component and you are away. It doesn't get any easier than this component, the best I've come across so far
There's also a "Project Honey Pot" plugin that will check their IP against a database of known spammers which looks good, too...clean, simple code that should keep the 'evil-doers' out.

The 1-2-3 step approach is nice, too...been too lazy to customize the graphics, but it works nicely nonetheless...shows step 2 after you submit, step 3 once they verify...pretty slick.
Is there an authentication plugin that allows an admin to add security by having one or more questions as part of the sign up process?
For instance, "What is the sum of the numbers two and three?"
Correct answer = "5" or "FIVE" as configured by the admin.
A wrong answer (say, more than 3 times, but configurable), locks the user out and notifies the admin.
I've found this to work quite well in other programs (vBulletin) as far as keeping the spammers at bay.
Most Captcha solutions seem to have been overcome by the spambots. Admin configurable questions creatively and intelligently created require a live person to answer properly.
I'd really like to see something like this added to Joomla or as an add-on module.
