Good VPS providers out there?

    • Yeah, that confused me a little too. I think its the same things as a VPS, but they don't want you to get the idea that you have to do all the management. Anyone here running an MVS from Rochen that can set the record straight?

    • Hello,

No we don't offer VPS services...

      Best Regards,

"private" is not synonymous with "managed." :) I'll take "Private for $50," Alex.

I use MVS from Rochen and it rocks! I just assumed MVS is VPS but with Managed, hence, way worth it.

VPS - Better than "Shared" and like "Dedicated", but cheaper! Plus, I can reboot, add all my own software etc, but with that privilege I better know what I am doing. So, it kind of sucks.

MVS = VPS, but I have a team behind me managing it. Basically using the VPS software, but they control it.

At least that is what I thought.

Spammers, Hackers, illegal activity and VPS - Please place your answer in the form of a question!

    • Ooooooh, no. As we all know, the correct answer is, "Why pay a 300% premium for less control, storage, and bandwidth."

      </Alex voice>

      :)

For the record, I, too, use Rochen...but think ServInt is probably the best value for great VPS. Hopefully Marine will report back substantiating this hypothesis. ;) I'm making the move in the not-too-distant future.

Its important to note this..since I didn't clarify above, when I said this -

Notice the part about "know everything" & "Kinda sucks" - I was referring to the fact that I don't know everything so it sucks for me.

Hence - I'll guess the answer "Alex"! Is it -
      "I pay because I'm dumb!"

P.S. Not dumb because I utilize Rochen's service, which is great, but dumb cause I don't know enough to completely manage a server all by my lonesome self. So Sad! LOL

Also, it is extremely nice to submit a ticket and have it done now worries! Stress Free! :cheesy:

    • If I read correctly at the Servint site, they will manage the server for you. So if I sign up for a VPS and I don't know the first thing about a server, I can just tell them what I want and they'll take care of it. This sounds like what Rochen does, except that if I do know what I'm doing with a server, I can just do it myself with Servint. Am I understanding the difference here correctly?

    • I haven't looked at Servint...but when I first started the whole VPS hunt, I noticed that in the fine print...you do everything...but some help you in the setup.

As for after that...up in the air for me, cause I never utilized them on the basis that -

      A) I want more than setup - I want someone to watch my back. i.e. Rochen's website backup "Vault" as they call it has saved my butt and has taken a lot of stress off me.

      B) When I need software installed or special setting for my server - I submit ticket and get great response. I mean - I spent enough time learning Joomla and still do...imagine a crash course in maintaining a server? Also, why add one more thing to my plate? I got better things to do. :P

So Sad! Love to answer you question, but then I leave you with this - I spent years with hosting that sucked, of course I didn't know that, until I found good hosting and learned how much better things work on good hosting.

It was amazing to me of how I found out after years, that on good hosting software works the way they, the developers, say it should, how I don't waste time trying to get things to work or figure out why they don't work and figuring ways to hack around to make it work. Plus, add the 500 errors, page not loading, site down etc. For me I found "things just work" on better hosting and if they don't - well, I get real answers and help from a qualified staff, not from a phone rep with a phone script in front of him. (not knocking those guys, been there done that  )

Last - the best way to learn is through doing!!! So if Servint looks like they got their act together, which I have heard they do, then try them and ask a lot of questions!!! :cheesy:

      Peace Out,
      Wingman

    • And Wingman, its so true that you don't know that your hosting sucks until you've tried good hosting. I ran a school website through Siteground for a while and thought it was fantastic. Then I started using the site as a resource in computer class. Turns out they only allowed 5 concurrent connections from one IP, so since we were using NAT in a lab full of computers, guess what happened. And it would be down for a while. Switched to a different host and things were hunky-dory. But lately, my site's been a bit slow and occasionally unable to connect. So I'm looking forward to moving to a VPS and crossing my fingers that the hosting is top-notch. It sure looks like it and others have said it is, so here goes.

I defiantly will. Hopefully, they will have it setup today.
