    PHP 4 or 5?

Posted 18 years 3 months ago
    • OK, I'm looking for a new hosting service and one of them I'm looking at says that I have a choice of PHP 4 or 5. Any suggestion about which to go with using Joomla, or does it matter?

    • As far as I know, PHP 5 runs faster.
However, there might be some issues with some components as for instance ExtCalendar, in combination with 5.
But, you could start with 4 and after having it up and running, take a clone to your home environment (xampp and the like) and do some trials on 5. The save way. Of course you could do the trial on your live site as well...

      Regards,

      Ton

    • Thanks GollumX,

I know that Andy doesn't promote hosting companies, but I was checking out Rochenhost.com (a name that's been thrown around here occasionally) and they have PHP 4 and PHP 5 on the same server. It's set up to use one or the other depending on what your compenent calls for. I don't understand it totally, but it seemed very nice - along with the other features too! I'm studying the hosting package. I may not need to worry about that anymore. Who knows?

      Thanks GollumX,

Wasn't me Dave :) You have AJH Penterman to thank

As for Rochen, I assume since their owners are probably the closest to(or part of??) the core joomla team, they would be optimised for joomla.
