Sub Domains - How do I?

  • Sub Domains - How do I?

    • Hello all

Until today, I have never used a sub domain. I have now set one up in my server and have no idea what to do with it

I know I can use it to host another site (Ideal for designing for a client before launch I'm thinking)

I have opened the sub domain in Filezilla and uploaded Joomla 1.5 to it, thinking the proces would be a repeat of the original install, but no, doesnt work.

Am I going at this all wrong?

      Thanks

    • Hi Julian,

You have to point your browser to the sub domain to start the install.

For example, if your site is www.mysite.com and your sub domain is 'dev', you'd go to www.dev.mysite.com .

Another alternative is to use a directory in your root.

So, in public_html you'd create a folder, for example 'dev', load your joomla files there and point your browser to www.mysite.com/dev .

Either will work, the second it a bit quicker because you're simply placing a folder in the root.

    • Thanks Jem

Managed to sort that out, I actually deleted the installation file before going through the Joomla set up process !!

Another question though, I set up the sub domain with its own database, which Im thinking may not be necessary as on my server I am allowed 5 subdomains but only 2 databases

When setting up a subdomain do I just use the information for the original database and not install sample data?

      Hope Ive explained clearly

      Thanks

    • Each install require its own database, doesn't matter if it's a sub-domain or sub-directory.

      Only 2 databases?

      That's crazy!!

      Consider changing hosts......

    • Hummmm Ok I have been happy with my host in terms of service and the way they have dealt with issues (from a beginner)

I will however ask the question, why ony 2 databases when 5 subdomains allowed -

With this in mind, who do you use for hosting ?

      Thanks
