What to use for template directory

  • What to use for template directory

    • Hi all, what suggestions do people have for what to use for a template style directory? I like how best of joomla have done theirs, I was thinking of using K2 with added fields for version, compatibility etc etc, with the download link hooking into Rokdownloads.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

    • See if I can get some interest going here. Best of Joomla template section is pretty awesome so what could be done to make it better?

Our site is covering the major CMS platforms so not just Joomla, as I said we are thinking
      K2
Jreviews as you can have multiple review criteria
Template download hooked into Rokdownloads so we can track downloads and use it as a search criteria
      Over image pop-up using Rockbok
Listing of template providers through core K2 capabilities
Ability to claim a listing for example we have added template providers designs and they can then claim the listing and update themselves

Thoughts people? We are about to start developing this part of the site and some user input would be brilliant to what you would like to see in a site that covers all aspects of building a site

You can see the best templates
      All the best extensions
      Sections on tutorials
Design with some of the nicest resources from around the web full credited to the respective sources
      SEO advice and tutorials
Hosting companies and ability to rate them and review
      Find third party developers
      List jobs you need done

Let us know what you would like to see so we can build a really good resource for all to benefit from.

      Cheers

    • Well cheers for everyone's input was invaluable - just a slight trickle of sarcasm

We have decided to go with Jreviews, it is an extensive module, that has full CCK capabilities, so you can pretty much create any kind of content requirement and then associate a set of custom rating criteria to it.

You can out put the content in many ways, listing summary to full listing detail, we have not used the component before so there is a bit a a learning curve associated with it, but from what we can see well worth the exercise.

From there we will create a custom template that will then display the template directory to suit the look and feel of the site.

We did a similar thing with Mosets Tree for the extensions directory, customising the fields to allow multiple platforms, compatibility, extension project page, author and a few other fields then wrapping it all up in a new template and customising the associated listing module.

As a bonus we can now also add a multiple rating system for the extensions directory instead of the single star rating it currently uses.

All in all if you are looking for a way to build a site based on informative reviews it looks like (so far) Jreviews is the way to go.

I will report back on just how easy or difficult it was to put it all together.

    • You are asking for input in the Rockettheme forums on a site that is going to be possibly in direct competition, logically so, you will not receive much input.
You are pretty much asking if your business plan and site setup is good.
To be honest, for me personally that is a bit over the top, if you wish to have input on this, place a request in the market place, and you will probably be given some quotes. I will for sure ask you my regular consulting fees. :cheesy:
I thus think your sarcasm is a bit misplaced, just my 2 cents.

    • I have one tip for you, which may be important in the future when people start looking for your site. Your site name almost matches the sitename of a site for xrated materials. Only one letter difference. What you may wish to do is reconsider the name. A potential client that makes one typo, will end up on the wrong page.

    • Roeland, assumption is the root of all evil, and one would of thought if you had read the description it may of enlightened you a bit that it is not a template club site, it is to be honest and why the parallel was drawn to Best Of Joomla, a similar site that covers most popular CMS platforms not just Joomla.

And if we have also been implementing a extensions directory again there is obvious indication it is not a template club site. Also if we are asking what would make a templates directory more appealing or useful than BOJ, again I am sure we are not talking competition here. In fact we are talking even more exposure for brands such as RT.

Also one would have to think a little logically would a user whom is obviously happy with RT and is an active participant would it make logical sense to then wee in the same pond as it were.

I think asking what would make a site better and what users would like to see is not only a good idea it helps build a better site for all to use.

Is BOJ in competition to RT no, it complements the brand, the same way we will be, I hope that clears that up.

On the site name being one letter different from apparently an adult site, in the 9 years we have owned the domain I have never had a customer say Oh we accidentally went to an adult site instead of yours. Bikin is Indonesian for 'make' in this case 'make website' I am not about to throw away a 9 year old domain.

And in fact we may pick up traffic the other way around so all in all probably is a bonus not a negative.

Afterthought: Our traffic will 95% come from search, and you cannot click wrong so it is even more irrelevant for misinterpretation of the domain name.

If anyone was wondering of the intentions of the site, a simple question would of solved all, not an assumption.

      My 20 cents....

    • It is competition, ever heared of substitute products? :cheesy:
Maybe you missed rockettheme its own extension directory. :cheesy:
I read the description, so that is an assumption that is the root of all evil, that I did not read it.
So, it is not an assumption, at least to me it sure is not.
The first site I hit, came because I tried to read your logo, but I typed an extra i, so I think you will have the issue sometimes, but it was just a suggestion, some free advice :cheesy:

      This quote I like:
Also one would have to think a little logically would a user whom is obviously happy with RT and is an active participant would it make logical sense to then wee in the same pond as it were.
you seem to be contradicting yourself.

    • Wow a lot of big smiley faces there...

Bikin not BIKINI you swim in them...I will take the chance, as I said 9 years no issues but that's cool, and as I said search will be how people find it.

The title ' Template Directory' says to me directory, yes I do believe I have heard of substitute products.

Now lets look at that for a second, lets say we send 15 thousand people a month to this site. A percentage will be looking for templates, a percentage are looking for advice or maybe an extension or simply having a sticky beak, no matter how you spin it, there is a whole new chunk of people who may never even knew of the existence of RT.

Of course you cannot get every person who is actively looking for a template to choose RT but it is still a new source for business. Also as we are building it with a very nice review function, again the most active template providers can get their members behind them, like has been requested here to vote for RT on BOJ.

Any new exposure for any brand only goes to extend market share, of course there are competing products, but does RT already not shine through the plethora of other brands, you do have faith in RT don't you....

Also as I do believe I stated earlier we are using an RT theme for it, don't you think an RT fan might just build a slight slant in the site towards RT.

At the end of the day, we are building a site that is useful for people whom either build their own sites, are looking for help, or just a central location to get the latest add-ons for their CMS.

By the way, how you don't quite get the quoted text you have highlighted I am not sure but it is not a contradiction.

If this is my swimming pool why would I piss in it.... That is no contradiction, I used wee to be polite!

    • Ok, let me rephrase, you are telling me that there is no competition, but you still want to wee in the same pond, so it is a contradictio in terminus:)
So you are basically pissing in it now......
That was funny. You offer great opportunities for a brilliant discussion, thanks!
