I'm working on a new site and want to add forum functionality and other community features - the site will be very heavy on community interaction and I want a lot of features for the users. I'm currently developing it with a popular (non-Joomla) CMS/membership software package, but it is taking way too long and I am very limited in the design due to their templating system, so I've thought about switching the site over to Joomla and an RT template.
Any suggestions for forum software that you guys use with Joomla? Thanks!

PHPBB and Kunena forum can both be integrated into a joomla installation. If you opt for PHPBB and want it to match your Joomla site then you will have to become a member of the phpBB3 club. You will then be able to match your PHPBB forum to the template. However if you don't do this, it can still be done, it just means that the forum will not match your joomla template quite as well.
Depending on what you want from a forum, Kunena is by far the easiest and quickest option when it comes to installing a forum into a Joomla installation. I think it is fair to say that phpbb3 is a more popular choice for forums as it's been around for quite a long time in various forms. Having said that, I do prefer Kunena for its ease-of-use. I have run a few forums using phpbb3 and to be quite honest, the Kunena does just as good a job. From my experience, the majority of members don't bother with gimmicks and extras that you may have on the forum. The beauty with Joomla is there absolutely tons of extensions that will enhance your website and give your members lots to play with.
I have also got Jomsocial which is designed to work with Kunena so you have various features that work with each other including profile, messaging system and quite a lot more.
I personally don't think that the phpbb3 forum gives you that much of an advantage over Kunena. I think the only argument people might put forward is whether or not Kunena can handle the amount of members that PHPbb may be able to cope with at one time
pHpBB If you want to go for Open Source... Or Invision Power Board? IPB offers Integration with Joomla
Apache Version 2.2.14 (Unix) | PHP Version 5.2.12 | MySQL Version 5.1.43-log | Architecture x86_64 | OS Linux | Joomla Version 1.5.20 | pHpBB v3.0.7-PL1 | Firefox v3.6.8 | Internet Explorer 8 |
Kunena no hack or any thing
well integrated with joomla 1.5 and other components
New version K 1.6 started from starch will be available early october (with a lot of features ) well integrated with joomla 1.5 (also will be for J1.6 ) and other components jomsocial uddim CB etc etc
Kunena strategy :
1. Security
2. Performance (fast runnig and no bugs )
3 . Features
"Kunena is available in Joomla 1.0 and 1.5 native versions. 1.0.11 and 1.5.4 are the most recent stable versions of Kunena. Going forward, we are focusing on native Joomla 1.5 & 1.6 compatibility. The future might bring other platforms and versions too."
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't the phpBB3 solution a bridge and a wrap basically?
Kunena grew out of Fireboard, which has been around a while, too, and runs native in Joomla! like all the other components. However, migrating from phpbb3 to Kunena may prove daunting, depending on the size of your forum sql and level of nuts and bolts expertise.
