Mac Web Design Software

    • I have a friend with an iMac who is considering purhcasing Dreamweaver retail, which is like $450 Canadian. Are there alternatives out there for OSX that would be comparable in quality that would cost less?

Keep in mind my friend is fairly new to web design and text-only editors are probably not an option for him.

      Thanks

    • Before paying anything Philip, get your friend to have a look at http://www.nvu.com/index.php . It's the 'open source' equivalent of Dreamweaver and not too bad at all. It also runs on MACs I think.

    • As he is new to this, he could have a look at Freeway 4 Express ($99), or Freeway 4 Pro (279$). Trial versions available.
Design exactly what you see in your mind’s eye. Simply draw the page the way you want it to appear, and publish. Freeway calculates the most efficient layout code possible to reproduce your vision on the widest range of browsers and operating systems.

Stay close to your design by making graphic headlines, cropping, rotating, or scaling photographs and illustrations right in your layout.

Use site-wide spell check and find-and-replace—even spell-check your graphic headlines—all without leaving Freeway’s legendary WYSIWYG design view.

Import graphics in nearly any raster or vector format, and almost any resolution or size. Freeway 4 automatically compresses and resamples high-resolution artwork without changing the original files.

Use multimedia content like QuickTime, Flash, and Director just as easily as any other graphic format.

Simply drag-and-drop or draw a content frame and import—it truly is the same as desktop publishing.

Certainly for a coder viewpoint, but I'm not sure somebody new to this can easily start with textmate and cssedit.

    • lol. Of course I agree with that, but my friend at this point doesn't even know basic html structure. He asked me the other day, "What should I start to learn first? html, css, pearl, ruby on rails?" Well, it might be a good idea to start with some HTML. ;)

So I want to get him a program where he can "draw" a box and switch to code view so he can learn what just happened in the background.

      Thanks again

    • This is the reason I proposed Freeway. It has been called the "Quark XPress" of web creation for its ability to draw a box, fill it with text or picture, rotate boxes, optimize images, map areas, etc. You can at any moment switch to HTML view, see and modify the code if needed.

I think Andy is the "Roger Federer" of the coders, and your friend is just wondering which racket to buy... ;)

    • I agree with Yves, I've not used Freeway myself but have heard great things from a lot of my "non coder" friends. From what I've read and what I've heard, it is one of the best hands on WYSIWYG style web editors...perfect for someone who is much more comfortable designing visually with drag and drop and all that good stuff :)
