Joomla is good and all but ...

    • Their "support" sucks!

Is it just me or does anyone else notice that people often have problems, ask for help on the Joomla forum and they get no answers at all, ever! Then when they complain about no support some smart mouth moderator - always the same one - comes in and tells them to be nice, that the joomla team are very busy blah blah blah. Yet still the actual question never gets answered!

If the people that make the product can't spend a little time helping people out that are trying to use it what is the point? So many people have problem and always their problems are met with silence.

You're told to do a search, so you do and all you find are dozens of people with the same prolem and never a reply. Unless of course there is a security bug in which case they fix it fairly quickly.

      /end rant

    • I think the Joomla team works on this without compensation, which means they are doing this in addition to their full time job. And you are getting Joomla for free.

There are consultants available if you want to pay for support.

    • Value isn't always defined in terms of monetry output. Wasting time trying to work out a problem can be seen as a waste of valuable time.

Yes, I know they do it outside "normal" work. There could still be a modicum of support associated, surely.

I read that at a recent Joomla group hug session held in Melbourne Australia people wonderd why Joomla wasn't be taken up on a larger scale by commercial entities. I'd say it has a lot to do with expect support loads. A "free" product may be fine and good for hobby or personal sites, but if you run a largish (or even medium business) and something goes wrong with your Joomla based CMS, you expect to be able to find support on the site that makes the product, from the people that make the product. That's not hte case, people can see that. They pick a product, that while it may cost them money to purchase, they know they will get support when things go wrong.

Sure you could pay a third party, but a lot of companies wont see any value in that.

Don't get me wrong, I love Joomla, I often recommend it to people, it's just that the support or lack thereof can be extremely frustrating.

Joomla is open source, and any medium or large business would have php programmers -- on staff and/or as consultants -- who can read through the code and solve the problem. That's what businesses do and that's what programmers do.

    • Joomla is a huge community and you should not expect support from the developers.

But because it's such a huge community I bet you that with a little search or visiting a few forums you can get answers to 99.9% of your problems and questions...

    • I can't post any links here due to possible conflicts, but Google is your friend I am sure you can find loads of forums with sections like "General Joomla Questions" on many sites..

You can find one on this forum as well - just post your questions in the general section and you might find some answers.

You mean Phil Taylor , he is a joke, his last mosDirectory update broke my site requested help, he go back confirming the problem but no fix, I quote "can see the problem but not resolved it" after a month of continuous request for help I finally gave up and decided to roll back when requested for an old version of the component I was told "We do not provide older versions of our software. Period. Sorry." so now I am stuck with a broken site. Bottom line if you want quality product and support don’t buy from Phil Taylor.

Lucky me I had made a backup.

    • Wow. There are some companies that sell scripts and two years later when I need another license key b/c I have a new computer, they provide it for me, no problem, such as Amara Software (great stuff, great service). Then there are other places like Rea Software that will not give you a license key for the software you bought 18 months ago, saying that you have to upgrade to the latest version.

I had a client who wanted a custome component and I called him and left a message and the call was never returned. Then later they announced they had time around the holidays for custom programming.

If you want cheap, cheap Joomla help, try Joomlancers.com. Their freelancers bid ridiculously low on the jobs. They must live in the sticks or a third-world country to be able to work that cheaply. Plus Joomlancers takes 10% of the bid amount if you win the job.
